How it works

A first-dive day in Kaş, step by step

A first dive in Kaş is a boat day, not an hourly activity. The flow below follows the program published by Blue Team Diving, the centre we recommend.

Already certified? This page is for first-time divers. If you hold a certification, your program is the day trip with two dives; same boat, same day. See the 2-dives-a-day program →
  1. Meet at the harbour

You meet on the boat in Kaş Harbour; after a quick hello and a short medical form, the boat leaves at 10:00.

  2. Briefing and gear-up

The instructor explains the equipment and the hand signals you'll use underwater, and answers every question.

  3. Get comfortable in shallow water

You practise breathing at standing depth first. No rush; nobody moves on before feeling ready.

  4. The dive: one to one

About 25 minutes with the instructor within arm's reach at all times. Fish, reef, and that first 'I'm flying' feeling.

  5. Enjoy the boat

After the dive: swimming, sunshine and the sea. The boat is back in the harbour in the afternoon; you spend the day on board.

If one dive isn't enough

Two dives in one day: SSI Basic Diver

The question first-timers ask most is about a second dive. If you're diving twice in one day anyway, Blue Team Diving's Basic Diver program makes more sense for most people: the same two dives, but you go home with an internationally recognised SSI card.

If you'd rather not do a certification, a second try dive can be added to the same day. Ask the centre for the current price of both options.

A sheltered, calm bay: its shallows are the classic for try dives and training, its deeper reaches suit experienced divers. The intricate bottom earned it the nickname 'Stonehenge'.

First dive in Kaş FAQ

Good to know

How long does a first dive in Kaş take?
You spend about 25 minutes underwater; with the briefing, the shallow-water practice and the boat, the program is a boat day: 10:00 departure, back in the afternoon. Plan your day around that.
I can't swim. Can I still dive?
Yes. Swimming skills aren't required for a first dive; the instructor stays with you one to one at all times. Being comfortable in the water is enough.
How deep do we go?
After practising in shallow water you descend to a safe depth within try-dive standards, as judged by the instructor. Depth is not the goal. If you choose the Basic Diver program with a second dive the same day, the second dive goes to 12 metres.
Can I dive the plane wreck on my first dive?
No. The plane wreck (C-47 Dakota) lies at 22 metres and calls for advanced certification. A first dive happens in a sheltered, shallow bay; the wrecks are your target once certified. What makes a first dive in Kaş special is the clarity, not the wreck.
I wear glasses or contact lenses. Is that a problem?
You can dive with soft contact lenses. Glasses don't fit under the mask; if your prescription is strong, tell the centre in advance and they'll suggest options.
What if I panic underwater?
The instructor is always within arm's reach and you communicate with simple hand signals. You can end the dive at any moment; a guest who doesn't feel ready is never pushed.
Does a first dive count toward a course?
A single try dive is not a certification program. If you choose the two-dive Basic Diver program, it credits toward the Scuba Diver or Open Water course within 6 months. If you want to continue, see our page on courses in Kaş.
