What is a course?

What a dive course actually gives you

A dive course is not a supervised holiday activity; it is structured training that turns you into a diver who can make their own decisions. The card you end up with is an international document that gets you air fills and rental gear at dive centres anywhere in the world.

Not to be confused with a try dive: a try dive is a one-off introduction where the instructor never leaves your side, and it issues no certificate. A course gives you a qualification. How a try dive works →
How many days?

The course, step by step

The entry course usually fits in 3-4 days and the advanced level in about 2. Finish the theory digitally before you arrive and you spend more of it in the sea; we flex the schedule around your holiday with the centre.

  1. Theory

The fundamentals: start at your own pace with digital materials, finish with the centre's instructor.

  2. Confined-water skills

Practise equipment use and core skills in shallow, calm water.

  3. Open-water dives

Apply your skills on real sea dives.

  4. Certification

After assessment you receive your internationally valid certification; we confirm in writing that materials and the fee are included.

The Course Path

From entry to pro: the level path

The three major systems, SSI, PADI and CMAS, follow the same level logic and recognise each other's certifications. We recommend the centre that fits your plan and dates, not a brand; each card shows the level's brand equivalents.

What's the difference between the three?

It's the most common question, and the short answer is: in day-to-day diving, very little. All three are internationally recognised, they accept each other's cards and their levels follow the same logic. Where they do diverge is the three rows below.

What decides quality is the instructor and the program, not the logo. So we don't sell you a system: we listen to your goal and your dates, then recommend the centre that fits. Read our full comparison of the three systems →
Validity

Where is your card valid, and for how long?

SSI, PADI and CMAS certifications are internationally recognised and accepted at dive centres worldwide. Your certification has no expiry date: once earned, it is yours for life.

In practice, centres ask divers returning after a long break to take a refresher; that is a safety habit, not a renewal requirement. Your records sit in the system's digital archive, so a lost card can be reissued.

Before you start

Who can start a course?

  • Entry courses have a minimum age and separate rules for juniors; send us the age and we'll check with the centre
  • Basic comfort swimming
  • A medical statement before the course; physician approval where needed
  • No experience required: courses start from zero

Partner Centre Standard

We don't work with every centre; here's our bar

Diamond Center is the highest official partnership level SSI (Scuba Schools International) awards to a dive centre; only a small number of centres meet its top standards across training quality, service, safety and regular activity. In every region it works in, Maceraya partners only with centres at this level: SSI Diamond or the equivalent standard in the PADI/CMAS systems. If we send you to a centre, it's because it clears that bar.

  • Partner centres at SSI Diamond level and equivalents
  • Internationally recognised certifications (SSI · PADI · CMAS)
  • Top training, service and safety standards
Pricing

How much does a diving course cost?

The exact price depends on the level, the dates, the group size and the centre, which is why we don't print a representative number here. Pick the program and we'll send you that centre's current quote, inclusions confirmed in writing, within minutes.

Where can you take it?

Which region will you do your course in?

Once you know what you're taking, the question becomes where. Bays, season, accommodation and the flow of the days change by region, and the region page walks through all of it.

Fethiye

Dive courses in Fethiye

Bays sheltered from the wind and shallow, calm training water, with walls just offshore for once you're certified. A comfortable region for a first certification.

Course FAQ

About dive training

Should I choose SSI, PADI or CMAS?
All three are internationally valid and recognise each other's certifications; in day-to-day diving the difference is minimal. What matters is instructor and program quality, not the logo, which is why we recommend the right centre, not a brand.
How much does an Open Water course cost?
The exact price depends on the level, the dates, the number of people and the centre, so we don't print a representative figure. Send your dates and we'll message you that day's current price and every inclusion, in writing, within minutes. You pay the dive centre directly.
How many days is the course, and will it fit my holiday?
The entry course (Open Water / 1★) usually fits in 3-4 days; the advanced level takes about 2. Finish the theory digitally before you arrive and you'll have more time in the sea. We build the schedule around your holiday with the centre.
What's included in the course price?
In the courses we arrange we require training, dives, equipment, boat, materials and the certification fee to be included, and we clarify it all with the centre and confirm it to you in writing upfront. No surprise extras later; payment is made directly to the dive centre.
Is my certificate valid worldwide, and does it expire?
Yes, and it does not expire. SSI, PADI and CMAS certifications are internationally recognised and accepted at dive centres worldwide. After a long break a centre may ask for a refresher dive; that is a safety habit, not a renewal requirement.
I've never dived. Can I start a course directly?
Yes, courses start from zero; no experience needed. In the shallow-water sessions you get comfortable with the water and equipment at your own pace with your instructor, and nobody goes deeper before feeling ready. Prefer a taste first? Start with a try dive and move on to the course.
I got certified years ago and feel rusty. What should I do?
A refresher program is exactly for this: you review your skills with an instructor, then join the daily trips with confidence. We send its exact price on WhatsApp within minutes.
