PADI vs SSI vs CMAS: An Impartial Comparison

Three systems, one goal
PADI and SSI are the two most widespread international dive training organisations worldwide. CMAS is an international underwater federation; in Türkiye its training runs under the Turkish Underwater Sports Federation (TSSF), with levels known by stars (1★, 2★, 3★). All three share the same goal: making you a safe, competent diver.
Equivalence: is your card accepted everywhere?
Yes: the entry-level certifications of all three systems are internationally recognised and accepted at dive centres around the world. Starting in one system and continuing to advanced levels in another is also common and possible; centres assess your level using equivalence tables.
Practical differences
- Materials: SSI stands out with its digital training app; PADI has digital options too. CMAS/TSSF training follows the federation curriculum.
- Reach: Abroad, PADI is the best-known name; SSI has spread quickly as well. CMAS has deep roots especially in Europe and Türkiye.
- Structure: PADI and SSI are commercial training organisations; CMAS is a federation system, with a strong club culture in Türkiye.
- Price: The difference usually comes not from the brand but from the centre's service scope (group size, materials, certification fees and so on).
The real question: brand or centre?
What long-time divers will tell you is this: the quality of your training is set not by logos but by your instructor and the centre's standards. Do they work in small groups, is the equipment well maintained, does the instructor give you time; those are the critical questions. The difference between two centres of the same brand can be far bigger than the difference between two brands.
