Key facts
  • A try dive is an experience; a course is training that earns an international licence
  • Half a day free? Try dive. Three to four free days? A course is on the table
  • A course is an investment: the certification is valid for life
  • If you're undecided, the most sensible first step is a try dive
  • Some centres count the try dive towards the course; ask upfront and we'll confirm with the centre

What exactly is the difference?

A try dive is an experience: half a day, one-to-one with an instructor, your first underwater breath in shallow water. It doesn't certify you, but it answers "is diving for me?" definitively. A dive course is training: in 3–4 days you earn an internationally valid licence and become able to dive anywhere in the world. The details of both: discover scuba diving · courses.

Question 1: How many days do you have?

If you can spare half a day of your holiday, the answer is clear: try dive. With 3–4 free days, a course comes into play. In between, there's also a middle road: basic 1–2 day short programmes; they grant a limited entry-level licence that can later be upgraded to the full certification.

Question 2: Which budget logic is yours?

A try dive is a one-off experience expense. A course is an investment: the licence is valid for life, and every subsequent dive happens at "certified diver" prices, on any boat you like. If you expect to dive a few times a year, the course pays for itself in the long run.

Question 3: What's your goal?

  • "I want to live it once on holiday" → Try dive. A wonderful memory, no commitment.
  • "I want diving to become a hobby" → Straight to a course. Skipping the try-dive step is perfectly fine.
  • "I'm not sure" → Try dive first. Many centres count the try dive towards the course or offset its cost if you continue; ask us upfront and we'll confirm with the centre.

Question 4: Still undecided?

For most undecided people the most sensible first step is a try dive: within half a day, the question "is this for me?" answers itself. Keep reading in either direction: Your First Scuba Dive: What to Expect · The Certification Systems
